Board Connect: Board Readiness Training

Individuals who want to learn more about board service can access the Board Connect Program, a comprehensive board service readiness program in Accelerate Board Readiness. It provides context for board service, presents real-life scenarios, and highlights guidance from skilled experts. This program is designed for those who wish to serve on a nonprofit board, as well as for current board members who wish to further develop their skills in service to our communities.

Training Overview

Module 1 Topics – Nonprofit basics, history, and evolution
Learning outcomes: what are your responsibilities and duties as a board member, structure of nonprofit boards, how to effectively work with nonprofit staff, and history of the nonprofit sector.

Module 2 Topics – Equitable board recruitment practices, LGBTQ+ Inclusion, equity and anti-racism as a community leader
Learning outcomes: EDIJ fundamentals and anti-racism framework, equitable board recruitment, and inclusive board leadership structures.

Module 3 Topics – Nonprofit finance 101 and fundraising as a volunteer
Learning outcomes: fiduciary responsibilities of a board member, fundraising basics & expectations, and resource building beyond fundraising.

Module 4 Topics – Finding the right board to serve on and strategic planning
Learning outcomes: personal and professional alignment with board service, networking and leadership as a critical component of service, and demystifying the strategic planning process.

About your facilitator: Deanna Kavanaugh

Deanna Kavanaugh is a board member at large and former interim executive director for The People’s Nonprofit Accelerator. Her background includes fundraising leadership and career services in higher education. She also previously served as the Director of Development and Planned Giving at Morrison Child and Family Services, where she regularly collaborated with an Operating Board and a Foundation Board.
