Board Service Expectations and Commitments
AdoptOneBlock is transitioning from a Founder’s Board to a governance-focused board, ensuring long-term sustainability and strategic leadership. This shift brings clearer structure, defined roles, and a stronger commitment to financial stewardship and community impact. Board members will now focus on governance, fundraising, and strategic partnerships rather than operational involvement.

As we evolve, we anticipate the development of committees to support our strategic initiatives. However, at this time, we do not have formal committees in place.

Are board members required to make a financial contribution or commitment to join the board?
Currently, board members are not required to make a financial contribution to join the board, but 100% of our Board members contribute annually. As we mature from a Founder’s Board to a governance-focused board, we intend to introduce a Give/Get model for many of our newer board members to ensure long-term financial sustainability.

Under this model, board members will be encouraged to contribute through:

✔️ Give – A personal financial contribution.

✔️ Get – Securing corporate sponsorships, fundraising, leveraging corporate giving programs, and fostering relationships with foundations and other funding sources.

Participation in fundraising will become an essential responsibility, and board members will be provided with tools, training, and support to meet this commitment.

Board Service Terms and Limits
Board terms are 3 years, with a maximum of 4 consecutive terms (12 years total).

HAF’s mission is to bring people and trees together. We create meaningful learning experiences in a unique global tree collection that we nurture in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation. We hope to add 3-5 new board members in 2025.

We are particularly interested in candidates with connections to diverse communities or culturally specific organizations in the Portland area who will bring important perspectives to our leadership and help shape organizational priorities moving forward. We welcome applicants with experience in: capital campaigns/fundraising, education/outdoor education, horticulture/landscaping, finance/wealth management, communications/marketing, and construction.

Most importantly, applicants should have a passion for the arboretum’s mission. Please don’t let a lack of prior board experience discourage you from learning more about volunteering for the board at Hoyt Arboretum. This is an exciting time at Hoyt Arboretum as our Board is engaged in a planning and feasibility study to determine our readiness to launch a capital campaign. This effort would expand and improve our facilities with an emphasis on better space for our plant care, educational spaces and visitor services, as well as staff work spaces.  We’re proud to be a center for botanical education, conservation research, outdoor recreation, and family-friendly activity. Hoyt Arboretum is also a free public park where all people can take part in the mental, spiritual, and physical enrichment that green outdoor spaces can offer. We prioritize providing access and a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds, so that no one is excluded from the health benefits and educational resources available at our park.  HAF staff and board have been learning and applying principles of Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion to our programming gradually over the past few years, and we understand that there is much more we can and must do.

Mission, Vision, Values
Serendipity is a community-based, nonprofit K-12 school that provides integrated education and mental health support for children and families who are affected by disability and trauma. We partner with 28 school districts across the Portland region to serve those students who need a lot of extra support.

Our mission is to provide the best environment for our students to heal and become educated, productive community members. Our Values: Serendipity’s core beliefs are drawn from the philosophy of RE-Education, developed by Dr. Nicholas Hobbs. The 12 Principles of RE-Ed form the foundation of our work and guide our adoption of all other practices. Put into action, you will see a culture designed to promote trusting relationships, competence and the mastery of new skills, the experience of community, and daily moments of joy.

Since 1979, students have been coming to us after numerous failed school placements when other avenues have been exhausted. Serendipity has a successful track record of helping students to be successful in school and in life, building skills that prepare them to return to their home district and/or for independent living after graduation. We offer a supportive school community where students who have yet to experience success at school can learn and thrive.

Each student at Serendipity is assigned a master’s level Clinical Case Manager who is responsible for delivering and coordinating mental health services for the student and their family. Our Four-Pillar model is focused on delivering programs under four cornerstone areas:

Education: Helping all children learn. We offer care and support to students within the framework of a regular school program of attending classes, pursuing areas of study, and earning credits towards a diploma.

Transition: Building skills for life. Serendipity’s transition services create a bridge between K-12 classrooms and independent living. We prepare students for their new lives in the adult world, including entering the workforce.

Mental Health: Healing through trauma-informed care. At Serendipity, mental health support and a cognitive-behavioral approach to maladaptive choices are seamlessly integrated into the classroom experience. Students benefit from individualized treatment support, psychosocial groups, art therapy, and coaching.

Wellness: Growing healthy habits. Serendipity’s Wellness program develops lifelong health habits, which are critical to students impacted by trauma. Serendipity students access therapeutic recreation, a nutritious school food services program, and our Growing Minds Garden and Farm program.

Projects Board Members will Participate in
We would love Board leadership on the following current challenges:

  • Securing adequate funding during a time of complex and changing systems for financing both education and mental health services in Oregon. There is a critical need to increase staff compensation levels to deter turn-over.
  • Adapting our facilities to meet the current needs of our children and programs. An upcoming capital project will lead to a more robust service delivery model (Transition services, therapeutic services, and the Communications Classroom) and we are seeking folks with an interest in capital projects and therapeutic programs.
  • Growing into the role of thought leader through participation in county and state policy discussions.
  • Regularly producing measurable outcome reports that reveal impact on present and past students, both for internal continuous improvement and for adding substance to thought leadership.
